    TOWN OF COVENTRY NOTICE PUBLIC HEARING 
     
     
    Notice is hereby given that the Town Council will be in session at the Town Hall Council Chambers, 1670 Flat River Road, Coventry, Rhode Island on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. for considering the proposed amendment to the following Ordinance: 
     
    WHEREAS, the Town Council, as the governing body of the Town of Coventry, has authority to make and ordain ordinances necessary for setting and establishing tax exemptions applicable to the citizenry of the Town of Coventry; and, 
     
    WHEREAS, the Town Council desires to amend the Town Code applicable to tax exemptions to apply to motor vehicles specifically adapted with a wheelchair lift for use by an individual with a disability, to include his/her immediate family member; 
     
    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED THAT: 
     
    Town Code Section 217-11 is hereby amended as follows: 
     
    § 217-11. Motor vehicle tax exemption. [Added 9-27-1993 by Ord. No. 6-93-0191] 
     A. In addition to the exemptions provided elsewhere in this chapter, the Tax Assessor of the Town of Coventry shall exempt from taxation up to 50% of the value of any motor vehicle that has been specifically adapted with a wheelchair lift for use by an individual and that is owned and registered by said individual any person, or his or her immediate family member, who has sustained a loss or permanent loss of both legs or both arms. For purposes of this exemption, immediate family member shall mean spouse, father, mother, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, or a person who lives in the same household as the individual. 
     
    This exemption shall apply to not more than one motor vehicle owned and registered for the personal, noncommercial use of such person. 
     B. After the Assessors have allowed an exemption under this section, no further evidence of the existence of the facts required by this section shall be required in any subsequent year in the city or town in which the exemption has been so allowed. 
     C. After the Assessors have allowed an exemption under this paragraph, no further evidence of the existence of the facts required by this paragraph shall be required in any subsequent year in the city or town in which the exemption has been allowed. 
     
    This Ordinance shall become effective upon passage. 
     
    Individuals requesting interpreter services for the hearing impaired must notify the Town Clerk’s Office at 822-9173 seventy-two (72) hours in advance of the hearing date.
