Coventry Police Chief, Colonel John MacDonald Announces Retirement after Twenty-Five Years of Service

Coventry Chief of Police Colonel John MacDonald has announced his retirement, effective February 28, 2020.  Colonel MacDonald is a 25-year veteran of the Coventry Police department appointed as a sworn officer in August of 1994.  He was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant in February of 2003 where he served in the patrol division.  Colonel MacDonald served as a Field Training Officer and as a team leader of the department’s regional SWAT Team.  In February of 2008, he was promoted to Lieutenant and later to Patrol Captain in February of 2012.  In February of 2013, Colonel MacDonald was selected to Detective Captain where he remained until his appointment as Coventry’s 14th Chief of Police in August of 2015.  Colonel MacDonald has received numerous letters of recommendations and commendations during his tenure at the Department.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Connecticut and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

Colonel MacDonald also served as the Emergency Management Director for the Town of Coventry.  He has served in many capacities within Coventry’s Emergency Management Team participating in many emergency responses including Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Winter Storm NEMO in 2013.  He expanded his emergency management experience in the Rhode Island Army National Guard during the historic floods of May 2010 where he planned and executed missions in support of the state of Rhode Island Emergency Management efforts.

Colonel MacDonald has served for over twenty-eight years in the Rhode Island Army National Guard where he holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  Lieutenant Colonel MacDonald has been an Army Helicopter pilot since 1995 and he has participated in two overseas tours in support of the Global War on Terror.  One of his most notable achievements came in 2005 when he commanded a Blackhawk Helicopter Company (A/1-126th) during combat operations in Iraq.  In 2011, he deployed again to Kuwait as the S-3 Operations Officer for the RI Army Aviation Battalion where he was responsible for daily operational missions involving over 40 aircraft and 350 personnel.  He has had many complex multi-cultural experiences during his military career including humanitarian and civil support operations in Central America, and multinational joint operations in the Middle East.  Lieutenant Colonel MacDonald served as the Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion 126th Aviation Regiment located at Quonset Point, Rhode Island for over three years leaving command in December of 2016.  Lieutenant Colonel MacDonald recently graduated from the Distance Education Program at the US Army War College, which is a demanding two-year program of instruction awarding a Masters of Strategic Studies degree. His highest military decoration is the Bronze Star.

As Interim Town Manager, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Colonel MacDonald for his many years of service to the Town of Coventry and the State of Rhode Island, as well as his military service to the country.  “John is a vital member of the town of Coventry management team and family.  He has always gone above and beyond to serve the people of Coventry”.  I’ve enjoyed working with Colonel MacDonald, and will greatly miss his knowledge and wisdom that he added to any discussion on the issues facing the Town of Coventry.

The Town has begun the recruitment process to find Colonel MacDonald’s successor.
